Course Description

The theory section of this course will teach you the basic rules of working with a the hoop on double point rigging, how to adapt existing aerial hoop moves from your syllabus, different methods of class planning and double point-specific health and safety. The practical section of this course will cover a wealth of techniques from adaptations on standard aerial hoop moves to new moves created by using the rigging and space above the top bar, to combining both of these into combinations, sequences and ultimately choreography. We will finish with different ways you can incorporate conditioning exercises into your aerial hoop classes to create cross-training option for your students.

UNIT 1 – INTRODUCTION TO DOUBLE POINT HOOP

As a starting point, we will introduce you to the different options for rigging your hoop as a double point apparatus. This includes understanding the nature of double point hoop and how it moves differently to single point rigging and testing the movement with a basic drill. We will cover foundation moves from the Spin City Beginners Aerial Hoop syllabus and familiarisation drills to help introduce double point hoop to your students.

UNIT 2 – DOUBLE POINT SKILLS

Our second unit is the main body of this course. We will cover over 40 different move variations: some from classical aerial hoop moves, some in the hoop, some standing, some using the top bar and an introduction to flipped hoop techniques. Each move will be detailed with teaching points, safety points, progressions, regressions, and common problems.

UNIT 3 – ADAPTING MOVES TO DOUBLE POINT RIGGING

Unit 3 is where we will teach you how to analyse your current aerial hoop syllabus to consider which moves can transfer over into double point hoop by following a 9-stage strategy.

UNIT 4 – COMBINATIONS AND CREATIVITY

Double point hoop can be a challenging apparatus to create flowing sequences on; the option to work above the top bar, between the rigging and with the hoop flipped up provides a whole new variety of combination options. This unit will provide a set of fixed combinations, as well as a combinations toolbox to inspire your own combinations and freestyle activities.

UNIT 5 – STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

Double point hoop is a fantastic option for mixed ability classes and offers a variety of options to develop students’ strength and stamina and technique. In Unit 5 we have provided a short series of individual skill-based exercises that will develop muscular strength and a longer sequences of drills that focus on stamina, suitable for beginner and intermediate learners.

UNIT 6 – HEALTH AND SAFETY

Health and safety is fundamental to effective double point hoop classes. In this unit, we will look at key health and safety concepts such as public liability insurance and risk assessments. We will also cover specific double point health and safety considerations, such as rigging,  clothing, hand care and equipment care.
